Helping Photographers Achieve Success

Jonas Aksel

Jonas Aksel was a Danish pro photographer living in Copenhagen, Denmark. He moved to Sweden for a short while with his parents and then back to Denmark where he grew up. As a child his mother shot a lot of pictures which she developed herself. Jonas always liked photography but never really put his soul into it before he was a grown up. Jonas had a good and long basic education within the Danish school system. After school Jonas worked as an IT consultant for many years traveling the world and always taking snapshots of places where he had been. One day he just decided to upgrade the compact family camera to a DSLR and from that point everything changed. Within a year, Jonas was working half time as an IT consultant to make time for the photography business he started, shooting his first cover for a national magazine after just one year of getting his first DSLR. Jonas kept developing his style over the next few years while continuing to get published in national magazines as well as international magazines… mainly in Europe, Asia and Australia. Jonas had the pleasure of working with a lot of national celebrities and a few international ones while shooting them for different magazines. In 2007 Jonas moved to London UK to further pursue his goal within photography.

What Equipment Do You Use?

Camera:
* I started out with Canon 10D
* Moved on to Canon 1Ds within a year.
* Got a Mamiya 645ADF with a Phaseone P25 digital back.
* In 2006 I changed to Hasselblad H2 + PhaseOne P30 digital back (32 mpixels)

For Canon I can warmly recommend the 50mm 1.4 lense, it's the best lense for the price, especially if you have a bit of crop factor it's perfect for models. Moving up the ladder, a lense like the 85mm L or 100mm macro used to be my favorites on Canon.

On Hasselblad I mainly use 80mm and 120mm macro lenses from Hasselblad.

Lights:
I don't know that much about different brands of lights because I always used Profoto. I found out what the rental places were mainly using and got that myself, because I think it's the best. I like the way the modifiers are fitted, the range of modifiers and of course the technical facts of the gear. And if I need something special for an assignment I can always rent it.
If I could give thumbs up for other brands it would be BronColor and the less known Briese from Germany which is super good but very expensive.
I use a lot of different modifiers depending on the assignment. Big umbrellas, small umbrellas, softboxes, beautydishes, ringflash, fresnell spots, etc.
