Jerry Avenaim, an A-list celebrity and fashion photographer, is a native of Chicago who got his start as assistant to legendary photographer Patrick Demarchelier. Upon venturing out on his own in 1985, his first assignment was a foreign edition Vogue cover of Cindy Crawford. He continued his fashion career based out of Milan working for Italian Vogue under the direction of Editor in Chief Franca Sozzani
Returning to the United States he gained the trust of American magazine editors, and began shooting for the major fashion catalogs in his hometown of Chicago. He got his first advertising campaign photographing Brooke Shields for Durasoft Contact lenses through Young & Rubicam in 1988.
Having made his mark as a fashion photographer, Avenaim moved to Los Angeles in 1992 and began photographing celebrities. He immediately fell in love with the genre. In the last decade, Avenaim's resume of mega-watt stars reads like a who's who of Hollywood. Some of his Hollywood stars include, Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, Ben Stiller, Mel Gibson, Charlize Theron, and Patricia Arquette just to name a few. His iconic portrait of Halle Berry landed on the cover of People magazine’s coveted Yearbook issue. Since, he was awarded over a dozen TV Guide covers, and the prestigious Fall Preview issue of the magazine.
Jerry Avenaim's celebrity portraits have graced scores of magazine covers and his images have appeared in almost every major magazine worldwide, including Vogue, GQ, Glamour, Vanity Fair and Newsweek. His list of advertising clients includes Durasoft, Phat Farm, Guess, Sexy Hair, Ford Motor Co., McDonalds, Samsung, Twentieth Century FOX and Warner Bros.
Known for his willingness to encourage young photographers, Avenaim has led hands on workshops since 2003 and has been a featured speaker at PIDE, PMA, Photo Plus Expo and colleges throughout the country. Through his professional work and feedback, he continues to aid in the development of photographic technology for leading camera and digital equipment manufacturers including Mamiya America, Olympus and Lexar Media.
